Have you watched the Harry Potter series? Do you remember any iconic scenes? Many would likely mention the four magical houses of Hogwarts! The highly regarded House system isn’t just fantasy; it’s a reality in international schools, particularly in the British House system. 

Harrow Beijing carries on the 450-year House tradition of Harrow UK, creating a small, close-knit campus community that integrates students from different year groups and organizes diverse House-based activities. These include the Harrow Long Run, annual sports day, charity events, annual music competitions, dance, choir, arts competitions, academic challenges, and various sports and swimming competitions, all aimed at fostering a strong sense of community and belonging among students.

This week, the highly anticipated 2024 Senior School House Music Competition concluded successfully! The House Music Competition is a longstanding Harrow tradition, beloved by both students and teachers. From song selection, choreography, band coordination, stage design, rehearsals to the final perfect performance, every detail reflects the tremendous effort of students and teachers in each House. It truly showcases Harrow’s core values: Courage, Honour, Humility, and Fellowship.

SONGQINGLING

Our students and teachers from Songqingling present a song named“Sunflower” from the movie: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. The lyrics reflect a sense of unwavering devotion, like the way sunflowers always turn towards the sun. This theme of steadfast commitment can also be seen in the life of Song Qingling, who dedicated herself entirely to her country—much like a sunflower that remains ever loyal to its source of light. 

KONGZI

Students from KongZi are bringing all the glamour and sparkle with their performance of ‘From Now On’ from The Greatest Showman. With a carnival vibe, a dazzling light show, and costumes that are absolutely the most eye-catching of the night, Kong Zi is all about big, bold, and unforgettable moments. They’ve taken the adventurous spirit of the film and made it their own, so get ready for a performance that’s as exciting as it is glamorous.

John Lion

This year, John Lyon House brings to the stage Taylor Swift’s iconic hit Love Story. The selection of this song was a unanimous choice among all the students, who poured their love for the song into this performance, capturing its essence while also expressing our pride for the house. The talented soloists, small choir, band, dancers, and main choir of the house worked together with great dedication, and their performance moved every single person in the audience.

Churchill

When you hear the name Churchill, what comes to mind as a member of the house? Yellow? Yes, Churchill House shines like gold, and their voices take us into the true golden hour!The performance that seamlessly blended three songs ‘Golden Hour‘、’Yellow’and ‘and Sunshine‘ made Churchill House the champion house this year. Let’s give them a round of applause for their outstanding performance!

JCC

Behind the smokey trains and the winter rides, I saw through the Opened door to an utopia filled with grace, and with a robin on the porch singing, what does it singing?  “See You Again” of course!  that is the music JCC is performing this year, they would like to deliver  a message about family and friendship, and about hope for the future.

Curie

This year, Curie House chose this song ‘We are all in This together‘ because the students believe that the house is their second home at school. The lyrics express the idea of “working together, united as one,” which reflects the concept of a “family,” where older students take on the responsibility of caring for and supporting their younger peers. This song represents the spirit of unity, which is one of the core values of Harrow Beijing. This year, the House Spirit in Curie is “Staying together! Be strong and brave! Building a closely-knit community!”

“Winning House Music with Churchill was an incredible experience. Even though music isn’t traditionally our strongest suit, we gave it our all and were determined to prove ourselves. Our mashup of three songs came together through countless hours of practice, creativity, and teamwork. Each member brought their best, and the result was a performance that reflected our collective effort and passion. This win wasn’t just about the trophy—it was about stepping out of our comfort zones and showing that as Churchill house can excel in any challenge. I’m so proud of what we achieved together, and it’s a victory I’ll always remember.”
