Director of Studies

Mr Andrew Hayes

“It is great to see that the hard work of our students and the commitment and dedication of our teaching staff and school leaders has paid off and resulted in a bumper set of top GCSE grades across the board. Highlights include the many students who achieved a full complement of A*/A grades which includes Helena M, Nina C, Midou L, Ailin M, Michael S, Jeremy S, Elang Z and Michael Z. The majority of students will continue on to their A Levels in the sixth form here at Harrow, where they choose three of four subjects to study in depth and these qualifications will support them on their journey to studying at the worlds best universities. I am sure that if students approach their A Levels with the same focus, commitment and tenacity that they have shown at GCSE, further success will follow. Many congratulations to our GCSE students!”

GCSE Curriculum

at Harrow Beijing

At Harrow Beijing, students enter the two-year GCSE stage in Year 10-11. During this stage, apart from compulsory subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English, the school also offers a wide range of elective courses such as Business studies, Music, Spanish, Design and Technology, and more, catering to the diverse interests and developmental needs of students. To better prepare students for the transition to the GCSE stage, from Year 9 onwards, the school offers numerous courses that revolve around the themes and skills required for the GCSE exams, ensuring students are well-prepared.‌

In addition to academic development, school also provides professional guidance for university and career planning support.

Through the Careers Programme which starts as early as Year 9, students are guided by their form tutors and the university guidance team to begin their university research and preparation journey. Students are guided by their form tutors to begin to identify their personal interests and strengths, map their competencies and attributes, and investigate higher education requirements for various occupations in order to start creating their own academic and university planning strategy.

From Year 10, students start to link their GCSE subject interest to their potential career choices and ultimately, to fulfill the possible pre-requisites requirements from universities, as well as an intention to lay a solid foundation for the further A Level studies. Through exploring super-curricular and extra-curricular activities, students are expected to build and tailor their academic skills and personal attributes. With a clear mindset of connecting their career interest with higher education plan, students will be directed to start their general university research. The system also allows students to remain flexible in their choices with the core sense to develop transferrable skills within and outside of academics and career options.

In Year 11, students are expected to develop a better understanding of today’s employment market and also gain practical skills through sessions such as resume writing which they may apply into their university application process and later in their careers. Well-equipped by the desirable knowledge and skills, students are guided to research different types of universities and subject choices in greater depth with an aim to find the right “fit” for their future academic pursuits. This is the essential part of the Career Programme which helps students to create their strategic plans for the A Level studies and further university applications.

With a solid foundation laid during the GCSE stage, each year, Harrow Beijing’s graduates progress to world-renowned universities for further studies with outstanding A Level results.

Architecture

“I started to take Design and Technology course from GCSE phase. The course offered various project design options, guiding students through stages from initial research and discussions with teachers to designing, setting standards, and producing tangible products, thereby opening up a new world of design experience for me. I believe that my experience studying DT at Harrow Beijing is a crucial factor for being admitted to the architecture design program at UCL. Many competitors’ schools do not offer this course. This course is very helpful for architecture majors.”

Music

“Harrow Beijing’s GCSE and A-level courses offer a wide range of subjects, including extensive options in arts and sciences. As a music enthusiast, I opted for music during GCSE, along with additional subjects like business and geography. Teachers provide professional guidance in course selection, preparing us well for future academic pursuits.”

Life Science

“I took a total of 11 GCSE subjects at Harrow, including the core subjects and additional ones like economics, geography, and art. Despite being in Year 13, , I find the current workload less stressful than in the middle school. This is because of a balanced approach to learning, allowing me time for hobbies like dancing and playing the piano.”
