Possessing native-level English proficiency

Parents familiar with Harrow Beijing know that our students speak fluent English comparable to that of native speakers. Both classroom instruction and extracurricular communication among peers and teachers are conducted in English. This is thanks to the high proportion of foreign teachers at Harrow Beijing and the school policy of using English as the primary language of communication. More importantly, Harrow Beijing integrates the development of subject knowledge with the improvement of English proficiency, enabling students to enhance their academic English while learning subject content. To help new students adapt more quickly to the English teaching environment, we offer personalized English language learning programs to support their language development. At the same time, we set clear language proficiency targets for different grade levels, and conduct assessments at least twice a year to help teachers track students’ language progress and create comprehensive teaching plans to support their steady improvement.

2024 Graduates Christina Z, IELTS 7.5

“I took the IELTS for the first time in Year 11, and it was almost unprepared—I just familiarized myself with the computer-based test environment and practiced speaking. In the end, I scored 7.5. At Harrow, everyone communicates in English. Before coming to Harrow, I attended a public school where my English wasn’t very strong. However, with the support of my teachers and classmates, I was immersed in English daily, and by reading more English books, my language skills gradually improved.”

Unlocking infinite potential

Harrow Beijing provide Rich and colorful activities/competitions on and off campus throughout the year supporting students to discover and develop their interests.

The LAMDA courses and examinations have long been a distinctive feature of Harrow Beijing’s education and are an essential part of its holistic education approach. In 2014, Harrow Beijing established the LAMDA Learning Centre and became an official LAMDA examination center. To date, over 4,000 students have earned LAMDA certificates. The LAMDA courses offered by Harrow Beijing include public speaking, verse and prose, acting, musical theatre, Shakespeare qualifications, and performance studies. These courses provide students with an authentic British educational experience, rapidly enhancing their English language skills while fostering overall development to prepare them for future challenges.

Head GirlFirst student in the world to take the New Shakespeare qualification and get Distinction  Lucy S

“Through participating in LAMDA courses and examinations, I gained confidence, unleashed my creativity, discovered my unique personality traits, and developed the vibrant character I have today. In terms of university applications, in my case, I am applying to universities in the United States—the LAMDA experience is an excellent way to demonstrate to admissions officers that I am a well-rounded student with a passion for extracurricular interests.”

Harrow Beijing is committed to providing students with world-class opportunities to enrich their lives, develop skills and interests, and prepare them to take on leadership roles in the global community. After the daily academic schedule, we offer a wide range of extracurricular activities aimed at fulfilling our core strategic goal of holistic education. These activities are based on the school’s core values and are designed to provide students with a physically challenging, enjoyable, and competitive environment that fosters skill development, student leadership, teamwork, and perseverance.

At Harrow Beijing, sports activities are one of the key features we emphasize, as we are committed to fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and an inclusive culture while striving for excellence. Our range of sports activities includes football, basketball, cricket, volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, mountain biking, martial arts, swimming, fitness, and boxing. Whether students are enhancing their athletic abilities, collaborating with teammates, or challenging themselves to achieve personal bests, our sports programs encourage everyone to participate and grow. In addition to skill development, we provide students with various types of competitions and inter-school leagues with international schools. Just this past weekend, the Harrow Beijing boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams achieved excellent results in the ACAMIS volleyball competition, securing first place in the boys’ category and second place in the girls’ category. These achievements are the result of the students’ hard training and the dedicated efforts of Harrow’s sports teachers and coaches, who employ scientific teaching methods and consistent support in both class and practice.

Year 13 Malakai A,
Leader of Harrow Beijing Volleyball Team

“The tournament went off to a rough start as we started with a loss to a team we felt we should have beaten, and beat in the first set of the game, however I am glad for this loss in retrospect as it was an important learning experience for our team. Discussing with the team and coaches after the match were were able to find the areas where we faltered in that match, and got some great advice from Mr Williams that we should never let our opponent dictate how we play and our ‘tempo’. After this we went into more games with a fresh mindset ready to play our best, and we did, winning 3 out of 4 of our remaining matches. And not letting any loss affect us negatively.

Our team had developed so much through the tournament, I can confidently say we played some of the best volleyball we ever played in the Final, and I am so proud of how far our team has come from the start of this season

My personal experience of the sport training at Harrow has been amazing. Having only started playing volleyball in September 2023, the support and training from the PE department and coaches has allowed me to develop my skills so far in this sport I have grown to love so much, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to play and lead the team for Harrow.”
