Y11 Geography Field Trip

On October 12, Year 11 Geography students went on a science trip to Mutianyu Great Wall with their teachers. They worked hard and completed coursework at different sites such as the visitor centre, the main entrance and the Wall. Experiencing the real world is essential and adds fun to Geography lessons. By visiting the historical site, the students not only learned about the environment impacts and construction features, but also enjoyed the beautiful scenery surrounding the ancient fortification.

Mrs Sharon Ringrose, Head of Geography said, ‘In Year 11 Geography, students completed a piece of coursework titled ‘Investigate the environmental impacts of tourism on the Mutianyu Great Wall’. To do this they collected a range of primary data including questionnaires, environmental quality surveys, traffic counts and graffiti counts. They also measured noise pollution with a decibel meter and measured footpath erosion on the Wall.

‘This piece of work is worth 27.5% of their IGCSE. By observing and carrying out their own fieldwork, students are able to use their own observations and data to support their work. Going out on field trips brings Geography to life and the Year 11 students will always remember spending their day on the Great Wall. For some students it was their first time visiting the Wall!’
