Open Day
Unknowingly, December has quietly arrived,
But the footsteps of education never stop.
Let’s witness the shining moments of Harrow students together!
Solid Foundation, Shining in Competitions
Harrow Beijing has always been dedicated to providing students with a variety of competition opportunities, allowing them to apply their solid foundational knowledge from the classroom to break through the barriers of knowledge and test their academic abilities in competitions. This year, under the guidance of their teachers, students from Harrow Beijing participated in several prestigious Biology Olympiad events. These included the British Biology Olympiad (BBO), organized by the Royal Society of Biology since its establishment in 1995; the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), recognized globally by the international biology community and organized by the International Biology Olympiad Committee; the Biology Olympiad Initiative USA-China, an elite competition hosted by the U.S. Center for Elite Education, known as one of the most academically rigorous and influential STEM competitions in the U.S.; the UK Biology Challenge, an authoritative biology competition hosted by the Royal Society of Biology; and the National Science League-Physical Science competition, an American scientific assessment focused on physical sciences.
Jeremy Sun-Year 12: Global Silver and National Bronze
Competing in the British Biology Olympiad was a transformative learning experience that deepened my understanding of advanced biological concepts and expanded my appreciation for the subject. Preparing for the competition encouraged me to explore topics beyond the standard curriculum, helping me connect theoretical knowledge to real-world applications. The challenging questions pushed me to think critically, analyse unfamiliar problems, and apply my knowledge in new ways. The experience also enhanced my time management and problem-solving skills under pressure. Overall, it was a rewarding opportunity that enriched my learning and strengthened my passion for biology.
Heran Lu- Year 11: Global Gold and National Bronze
Taking part in the British Biology Olympiad was a really rewarding experience that helped me learn so much about biology beyond what’s taught in class. It introduced me to fascinating topics like molecular biology and genetics, and I loved seeing how they connect to real-world issues. The tough questions pushed me to think on my feet and solve problems in new ways, which was both challenging and exciting. I also got better at managing my time and staying focused under pressure. Overall, it was a great opportunity that boosted my love for biology and encouraged me to keep exploring it.
Serena Liu- Year 13: National Silver (2)
As I approach graduation, I look back on the valuable experiences I gained from participating in two biology competitions during my Y12. These contests not only deepened my understanding of biology but also played a significant role in my university applications. Preparing for these competitions, I had the opportunity to explore complex biological concepts, which helped me develop stronger problem-solving skills and a deeper appreciation for the subject.
While I was fortunate to achieve good results, I believe that the real value came from the learning process and the chance to connect with other passionate students. These experiences reinforced my decision to pursue a further study in biology at university, a field that continues to inspire and challenge me.
I wholeheartedly encourage anyone with a spark of interest in biology to take part in such competitions. They are a wonderful way to explore the wonders of the natural world, meet like-minded individuals, and discover your own capabilities. My hope is that through these experiences, more people will fall in love with biology, just as I have, and perhaps some of us will go on to make meaningful contributions to science and our understanding of life.
Linus Zhou- Year 9: Global Silver
After participating in the Biology Challenge, I am filled with a renewed sense of excitement and passion for the field of biology. This competition has truly highlighted my love for exploring the intricacies of life and the natural world. However, it has also made me realize how much more there is to learn; my current understanding feels like just the tip of the iceberg. This awareness motivates me to delve deeper into my studies and expand my knowledge. Looking towards the future, I am eager to further explore the wonders of biology, fuelling my curiosity and inspiring me to contribute to this ever-evolving field.
