Recently, our campus welcomed familiar and cherished faces—our Harrow Beijing Class of 2024 alumni! Returning with valuable experiences and unique insights from their time at overseas universities, they shared their study abroad journeys with students in Years 11 to 13. This event not only gave students a deeper understanding of life and studies in different countries and institutions, but also provided valuable reference and inspiration for their future plans. Through the alumni’s stories, we were reminded of the warmth and unity of the Harrow family, which continues to resonate deeply within our community.

Before the event, we had the privilege of interviewing two alumni, Jasper S and Penny Y, to hear about their experiences as they first entered university, their insights into studying, and their fond memories of their time at Harrow Beijing!

First experience of university life overseas?

Penny Y: Starting university in a foreign country, the biggest difference I felt was that everything had to be done independently. Whether it was opening a bank account or getting a SIM card, I had to handle it all on my own. Fortunately, I met many kind people who helped me along the way. Academically, university is different from high school. The workload each week isn’t as intense, which has allowed me more opportunities for internships and given me time to conduct research and experiments based on my academic interests.

Jasper S: Entering university was an incredibly exciting experience for me. My first semester went very well academically, but I realized that I should have participated in more extracurricular activities. Doing so would have allowed me to make more friends.

During your time at university, did you find that the habits you developed while studying at Harrow Beijing helped you adjust to university life?

Penny Y: For me, the most important skills were my English proficiency and the ability to ask questions. These two skills have benefited me greatly in university. At Harrow Beijing, our teachers provided us with an English-only learning environment, which helped me develop my English writing skills. The teachers were also very patient, allowing my English to improve quickly, and this made it easy for me to seamlessly transition to writing papers at university. During high school, our teachers always encouraged us to ask questions and approach them directly whenever we had any doubts. This habit of asking questions has stayed with me in university, whether it’s related to further education, career planning, or internships, I always find the right teachers to consult. It was this system at Harrow that allowed me to navigate university life with ease.

Jasper S: I believe the most important skill is time management. Time management is one of the essential skills for university life. In high school, our teachers required us to manage our time independently to complete coursework and assignments, which is very similar to the university system. I brought this habit with me into my university exams and classes, planning out what I need to do each day and the timing for the next day. I optimized my time management to avoid wasting time, and this habit proved to be incredibly useful during exam preparation.

How have A Levels helped you adapt to university study in terms of academic depth and difficulty?

Penny Y: Compared to other curricula, the A-Level program delves deeper into the content and has fewer subjects, which is very similar to university study. I’m currently studying Psychology, and like A-Level, I only need to take four courses each semester. The independent learning skills I developed during my A-Level studies have made university life much easier for me, as university learning requires more self-directed study. Homework and essays are the most important aspects of independent learning, and I feel well-prepared for them because of my experience in A-Level.

Jasper S: To be honest, the difficulty of A-Level courses was greater than what I encountered in my first year of university. This might be characteristic of Boston University, as they don’t want to put too much pressure on first-year students. For example, the math courses I took in my first year were much easier than A-Level math. At the same time, Boston University allows A-Level results to count for university credits, which further confirms the recognition of A-Level by U.S. universities.

If you could put one word to describe what Harrow Beijing means to you, what would it be?

Penny Y: Home! For me, Harrow Beijing feels like home. The people here, both students and teachers, are incredibly friendly and caring, always surrounding you like family.

Jasper S: Harrow Beijing is an irreplaceable school for me, and it’s hard to express my love for it in just one word. No matter how many times I had to choose, I would always firmly choose Harrow Beijing. Here, I met so many wonderful people and great teachers. The teachers at Harrow are dedicated and responsible, always ready to help, even in the middle of the night. Their teaching methods are both interesting and profound, which is why we enjoy learning here. Harrow Beijing excels academically, but it also nurtured and developed my strengths in other areas, such as sports. I can’t imagine what kind of person I would have become if I hadn’t come to Harrow. I’m sure I wouldn’t be as happy and positive as I am now.

Watching our Harrow alumni return to campus and reflecting on their growth and achievements fills us with immense pride. In the future, Harrow alumni will continue to shine across the globe, and we look forward to more senior alumni returning to share even more valuable experiences and stories with our current students.

To every Harrow alumnus, you will forever be an indispensable part of the Harrow family!
